Transitioning to a Responsive Web Application from Desktop Native

Avoburger

Upon assessing Avoburger's operational needs and the limitations of their existing desktop-only application, it was evident that a more accessible, flexible solution was necessary. The goal was to transition the platform into a responsive web application (RWA) that would cater not only to in-house staff like Maria but also potentially offer functionalities for remote access by higher management or other stakeholders.

Project Deliverables
  • Objective: Transform Avoburger's desktop application into a responsive web application (RWA) to enhance functionality and user accessibility across multiple devices.

  • Key Challenge: Redesigning the user interface and experience to ensure seamless operation, specifically for real-time updates on deliveries, inventory, and sales.

  • UX UI Design
  • User Research
  • App Mockup
  • User Testing

User Research: The Start of the Design Process

Before diving into the design, I embarked on a comprehensive user research journey. I interviewed:

  • Restaurant managers to understand the operational challenges they faced.

  • Delivery personnel to gauge the difficulties in real-time navigation and coordination.

  • Customers to learn about their ordering habits and feedback.

Key Findings:

  • Managers struggled with inventory assessment and organizing menu items.

  • Delivery personnel often found it hard to prioritize orders due to a lack of real-time information.

  • Customers desired a clearer understanding of delivery ETAs.

The "Core" Problem.

There was no unified platform that offered an overview of ongoing orders, available menu items, and delivery tracking.  Their existing desktop application limited operational efficiency and adaptability, particularly during peak restaurant hours and for remote monitoring needs.

Prioritizing features

Three Main Features Design:

  1. Real-Time Menu Management:

    • Function: Enabled restaurant managers to quickly update menu items based on availability.

    • Design: A simple, intuitive dashboard where menu items could be toggled on/off based on stock. Items low in stock would be highlighted, prompting managers to take action.

  2. Ongoing and Previous Orders Data Table:

    • Function: Managers could view, in real-time, the status of every order, whether being prepared, ready for delivery, or completed.

    • Design: A sleek data table displaying orders with color-coded statuses. Filters allowed managers to view orders by status, location, or time frame.

  3. Interactive Delivery Map and Sales Performance Tracker:

    • Function: This dual-feature allowed for live tracking of deliveries and a comprehensive sales performance review.

    • Design: An interactive map showed moving pins for each delivery person. Managers could click on a pin to see order details. A separate tab offered graphs and charts detailing daily sales, with an option to download stats.

Real-Time Menu Management

  • Allows immediate modification and updates to the menu, ensuring customers always have access to current offerings.

  • Integrates seamlessly with inventory, automatically removing or flagging items that are out of stock or unavailable.

Operational Advantages:

  • Enhances customer satisfaction by providing accurate menu information, reducing the likelihood of order issues.

  • Improves kitchen efficiency, with staff able to prepare for dishes based on the most recent menu updates.

Overall Impact:

  • Ensures a smoother, more reliable dining experience for customers, fostering greater trust in the Avoburger brand.

  • Reduces staff workload related to manual menu alterations and cross-team communication.

Interactive Delivery Map and Sales Performance Tracker:

Interactive Delivery Map:

  • Enables real-time tracking of delivery drivers using GPS technology.

  • Calculates and communicates accurate ETAs to customers, factoring in traffic and distance.

  • Records delivery history for efficiency analysis and future route optimization.

Sales Performance Tracker:

  • Provides live updates on sales metrics, including order counts, revenue, and popular items.

  • Compiles historical data for trend analysis and strategy formulation.

  • Allows downloadable, customizable sales reports for varied time frames.

Combined Benefits:

  • Streamlines daily operations with live logistical and sales insights.

  • Boosts customer satisfaction through transparent delivery updates.

  • Supports strategic, data-driven decision-making for management.

High Fidelity Flows

This is the high-fidelity user flow for an ADMIN of Avoburger utilizing the app. They are prompted to onboard and can access their main dashboard,  track delivery activity and ETA's. They can also edit menu options including prices and stay up to date with sales activity by downloading daily performance reports

Moving Forward

Lessons I learned:

User-Centric Approach: The importance of grounding design in user research was reinforced. By truly understanding end-user needs, I was able to tailor features that added tangible value.

  • Iterative Design: While the first version of the app was functional, subsequent iterations, based on user feedback, made it more user-friendly and efficient.

What I'd Do Differently:

  1. Earlier Stakeholder Involvement: Engaging stakeholders at every stage would have provided richer insights and potentially expedited the design process.

  2. Expand Testing: While initial testing was limited to a single Avoburger location, expanding it to multiple sites simultaneously would have offered a more comprehensive understanding of challenges and solutions.

In conclusion, designing the Avoburger app was an enlightening journey in understanding the intricate challenges of multi-location restaurant management. The end product not only streamlined operations but also laid the foundation for Avoburger's future tech-driven growth.
